Leprosy Awareness Programm (An Initiative By Sewa)

Venue- Auditorium, Suncity School, Gurugram
Day/Date- Friday, 10th February 2024

“LEPROSY IS SOMETHING WE NEED TO FIGHT, TOGETHER TO MAKE THIS WORLD A HEALTHIER PLACE TO LIVE.”

Our students in grades VII, VIII, and IX were witness to an enriching session on Leprosy led by Ms. Sophy and Mr. Subhojit Goswami from The Leprosy Trust Mission India, based in New Delhi. The objective of this session was to raise awareness about leprosy, educate on how to interact with patients and emphasize the importance of providing care and empathy.

The speakers discussed the transmission of leprosy and highlighted the demographics most affected within society. Despite the World Health Organization's provision of free treatment, many affected individuals either do not complete their treatment or do not receive it at all. The persistent societal stigma surrounding leprosy often prevents individuals from seeking help upon experiencing initial symptoms, resulting in delayed diagnosis and the development of disabilities.

Furthermore, girls and women affected by leprosy encounter additional challenges due to gender and social discrimination, which can further impede the detection of the disease.

Overall, the session was highly informative and impactful.
